Minnequa Dam
The Big Horn Sheep Canyon Chapter proudly supports the Arkansas River Watershed Collaborative (ARWC) in its Minnequa Diversion Dam Feasibility Study—a vital community-driven project to enhance the health and accessibility of the Arkansas River.
Located near Pueblo, the Minnequa Dam is the last remaining barrier restricting fish and boat passage along the river from Leadville to Pueblo Reservoir. Historically, native species such as the flathead chub and Arkansas darter thrived in this stretch but were lost due to mining pollution in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. With water quality now significantly improved, removing or modifying this barrier could enable natural recolonization of these species and restore ecological connectivity across the watershed.
The project also addresses recreational access: a 1.6-mile section of river currently remains off-limits to boaters and anglers due to safety concerns around the structure. Successful solutions could open this reach for safe public use, boosting opportunities for fishing and paddling while supporting local businesses and the region's outdoor economy.
As a chapter dedicated to protecting the Arkansas River's wild trout fisheries and tributaries, we align closely with this effort's goals of improving habitat, enhancing fish passage, and promoting responsible recreation. We actively engage stakeholders, advocate for science-based outcomes that balance water needs with conservation, and raise awareness among our members and the community.
This collaborative initiative—bringing together local governments, water users, conservation groups, and residents—exemplifies how shared stewardship can benefit the entire Arkansas River Basin. Learn more at the ARWC project page.
